With the best teakwood selected, the next step in the creation of exceptional teak garden furniture is to use the most superior methods…
Teakunique has long established partnerships with a number of independent factories, and an excellent Indonesian-based Rep. We visit annually to retain high standards, discuss new designs or alterations, view new machinery invested in, and maintain quality control. We also take the opportunity to visit other craftsman who may specialise in a particular area of production.
The skilled production process starts at the sawmills, where the mature heartwood timber is selected and cut in the best way depending on its end use. The cut parts will go through various stages of creation thereafter.
Slowly kiln-drying the wood to a 12% moisture content is an important step in enhancing the strength and durability of Teakunique garden furniture. This time consuming process, usually undertaken before and after assembly, makes up a third of the production costs but is vital in helping to avoid teak furniture cracking, bending, warping, shrinking, or splitting.
Teakunique garden furniture is machine made to guarantee the best joinery and ensure each style of product is structurally identical with strong joints and components fitting perfectly. All parts will be machine sanded before being expertly assembled by hand. We specify a preference for teak joinery, but where this is not possible, high quality brass hardware is used. A combination of hand and machine sanding completes the production process.
Our knowledgeable Rep ensures Teakunique’s exact specifications are followed and keeps us updated at every stage. He is also responsible for undertaking rigorous Quality Control prior to the teak garden furniture being packed and loaded into a shipping container bound for Southampton. He also handles the paperwork, which includes the SVLK certificate and FLEGT license verifying legal export of timber originating from sustainably managed plantations.
We hope our series of ‘From Seed to the South Downs’ posts have provided an overview of how Teakunique garden furniture is created. Top quality heartwood timber is essential, however skilful production and in particular slow kiln-drying are equally as crucial in ensuring our customers have stylishly designed and strong teak furniture capable of lasting a lifetime.
